What is Myotherapy?

What is myotherapy and how does it differ from physiotherapy and chiropractic?

At Muscle Freedom, we are often asked “what is myotherapy” and how it differs from physiotherapy and chiropractic. While all three allied health professions may use massage in their treatments, each has different objectives.

What is Myotherapy?

According to the Myotherapy Association Australia, myotherapy is defined as: “the evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions.” The emphasis is on treating soft tissue problems and joint movement issues caused by myofascia or muscle dysfunction.

Myotherapists use manual therapy, dry needling, thermo and electro-therapeutic techniques during treatments. They may prescribe exercises or stretches to improve your range of movement, or they may educate patients about how to change their lifestyles to improve musculoskeletal function. Myotherapists treat back, shoulder and neck pain, headaches, sports injuries, tennis elbow, chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia and much more.

What is Physiotherapy?

According to the Australian Physiotherapy Association, physiotherapists “assess, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of health conditions and movement disorders using advanced techniques and evidence-based care. They repair damage, reduce stiffness and pain, increase mobility and improve quality of life. Physiotherapy extends from health promotion to injury prevention, acute care, rehabilitation, maintenance of functional mobility, chronic disease management, patient and carer education and occupational health.”

Physiotherapists treat physical problems arising from injury, disease, illness and ageing using joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue work, electrotherapy (TENS), laser therapy and ultrasound, exercise prescription, and education.

What is Chiropractic?

According to the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia, chiropractic is: “a modality of treatment concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system; this includes the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.” Chiropractors believe the nervous system must be free of interference for the body to adequately respond to the environment. Their focus is on spinal function.
