Everything you need to know about deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage is one of the most common and effective ways to treat pain and injury. Here’s the lowdown on what’s involved:

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

This technique uses firm pressure to release tight layers of muscle and tissue, which usually develop from bad posture, injury or overuse. Restoring movement in soft tissues alleviates pain, muscle spasm and stress from the problematic area.

Deep tissue massage can:

  • Relax stiff muscles to restore pain-free movement
  • Reduce muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Relieve stress
  • Free up creaky joints

What conditions can it treat?

Deep tissue massage is very effective in treating chronic problems such as stiff necks, strained or twisted shoulder muscles, and lower back stiffness or pain. It is also highly beneficial in reducing pain and discomfort for issues such as whiplash.

At Muscle Freedom, we use this technique on a range of clients, from tradies suffering due to the physically demanding nature of their work to elite athletes feeling worn-out after a heavy training session.

What should I expect during a Deep Tissue Massage?

Our highly trained therapists may use their hands, fingertips, knuckles and even elbows, to effectively release areas of tension. Taking deep breaths can help you relax. This deeper style of massage may sometimes cause some soreness during, or in the days following, the massage. This is simply the muscles releasing stored tension and toxins and will fade within a few days.

Tips for recovery?

Make sure you drink plenty of water after your treatment and avoid caffeinated drinks for the rest of the day. We also recommend avoiding the gym for 24 hours.
